Sharp Energy is one of the largest propane gas suppliers in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Yet our customer service has a personal touch you won’t often find with a propane supplier our size.
Sharp Energy is a subsidiary of Chesapeake Utilities Corporation (NYSE:CPK), and we’ve been providing reliable, dependable propane service on the Delmarva Peninsula for more than 40 years. With over three million gallons of storage capacity right here on the Mid-Atlantic Region, that means no disruption in service for our customers.

Our History as a Propane Supplier
Sharp acquired Clarence E. Sharp Company, in Georgetown, DE. It was a propane distribution company called Sharpgas, Inc., but operating under the name Sharp Energy. As a result, we were able to consolidate Chesapeake’s propane distribution operations.
Soon after Sharpgas, we acquired Kellam Energy, Inc. in Belle Haven, VA. It was a propane and oil products distribution company.
In 1996, the Sharp Energy offices in Easton, Pocomoke City, Salisbury, and Chincoteague were established.
Also in 1996, Chesapeake Utilities constructed the first underground piped propane system. This was for the Plantations Development in Lewes, DE which served 375 homes.
In 1997, Sharp Energy acquired two gas companies: Tri-County Gas Company in Salisbury, MD and Sheldon Gas Company in Dover, DE.

In 2002, we needed to provide the conveniences of a metered delivery system to communities where natural gas was not available and thus, the Community Gas Systems division of Sharp Energy was formed.
We established the largest community served by a community propane gas system. It is located in Selbyville, DE with 1,700 homes and businesses.
A Sharp Energy propane start-up was initiated in Chester County, PA. The office is located in Honey Brook, PA.
A Sharp Energy propane start-up was initiated in Lehigh County, PA. The office is located in Orefield, PA.
We expanded the Sharp Energy community gas system strategy to Pennsylvania.
In 2007, Sharp Energy community gas systems installed over 2,600 meters for newly constructed homes between 2007 and 2011 averaging over 500 per year.
Sharp Energy acquired the operating assets of Virginia LP Gas, Inc. based in Exmore, VA. A propane start-up was initiated in Cecil County, MD.
Sharp Energy introduced the Pink bobtail to the Community, sponsoring the Susan G. Komen Organization.
Sharp Energy established a location in Pocono Lake, PA.
By the end of 2011, Sharp CGS had installed community gas systems in 60 developments serving over 6,500 customers in Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania.
As of January 2012, the combined storage capacity for all active CGS communities exceeded 622,000 gallons of propane.
In 2013, Sharp Energy signed up our first AutoGas customer, Kent-Sussex Industries.
In 2016, Sharp Energy established a new propane location in Anne Arundel, MD.
Sharp Energy signs its first National Propane Customer, BJ’s.
Sharp Energy introduced a new Charity Bobtail to the Community with proceeds benefitting Nemours, Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children.
Sharp AutoGas expanded to Jupiter and Jacksonville, FL.
Sharp Energy acquired the propane sales and delivery business of R.F. Ohl, located in Lehighton, PA.
In 2019, Sharp Energy established a new propane supplier location in Mattaponi, VA.
Sharp Energy acquired the propane operations of Boulden Brothers located in Newark, DE.
Sharp Energy introduced a new Charity Bobtail to the Community sponsoring the Ronald McDonald House of DE.
Sharp Energy acquired the propane options of Western Natural Gas, located in Jacksonville, FL.
