Sharp Energy is a subsidiary of Chesapeake Utilities Corporation (NYSE:CPK) and has provided reliable, dependable propane service on the Delmarva Peninsula for more than 40 years. With multiple rail facilities and approximately nine million gallons of propane storage, Sharp Energy has established a solid supply portfolio. We are proud to serve approximately 86,000 residential and commercial propane customers from 29 service centers and customers in Delaware, Florida, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. In addition to providing propane service to residential and commercial customers, our AutoGas operations currently provide propane to fuel over 1,300 vehicles, displacing approximately 3.6 million gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel and significantly lowering carbon emissions.

AutoGas Operations

In addition to providing propane service to residential and commercial customers, our AutoGas operations currently provide propane to fuel over 1,300 vehicles, displacing approximately 3.6 million gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel and significantly lowering carbon emissions. Sharp Energy is a proud partner of Alliance AutoGas, a national network of companies that have joined together to deliver a comprehensive alternative fueling solution including EPA-certified propane AutoGas vehicle conversions, on-site fueling infrastructure, fuel supply, safety and operational training, and ongoing technical support.

Our History

1981

Sharp acquired Clarence E. Sharp Company in Georgetown, Delaware. It was a propane distribution company called Sharpgas, Inc., but operating under the name Sharp Energy. As a result, we were able to consolidate Chesapeake Utiltiies’ propane distribution operation.

1988

Soon after Sharpgas, we acquired Kellam Energy, Inc. in Belle Haven, Virginia. It was a propane and oil products distribution company.

1996

In 1996, the Sharp Energy offices in Easton, Pocomoke City, Salisbury and Chincoteague were established.

1996

Also in 1996, Sharp Energy constructed the first underground piped propane system. This was for the Plantations Development in Lewes, Delaware, which served 375 homes.

1997

In 1997, Sharp Energy acquired two gas companies: Tri-County Gas Company in Salisbury, Maryland, and Sheldon Gas Company in Dover, Delaware.

1999

The Sharp Energy location in Dover, Delaware.

2002

In 2002, we needed to provide the conveniences of a metered delivery system to communities where natural gas was not available and thus, the Community Gas Systems division of Sharp Energy was formed.

2003

We established the largest community served by a community propane gas system. It is located in Selbyville, Delaware with 1,700 homes and businesses.

2004

A Sharp Energy propane start-up was initiated in Chester County, Pennsylvania. The office is located in Honey Brook, Pennsylvania.

2005

A Sharp Energy propane start-up was initiated in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. The office is located in Orefield, Pennsylvania.

2006

We expanded the Sharp Energy community gas system strategy to Pennsylvania.

2007

In 2007, Sharp Energy community gas systems installed over 2,600 meters for newly constructed homes between 2007 and 2011 averaging over 500 per year.

2010

Sharp Energy acquired the operating assets of Virginia LP Gas, Inc. based in Exmore, Virginia. A propane start-up was initiated in Cecil County, Maryland.

2011

Sharp Energy introduced the pink charity bobtail to the Community, sponsoring the Susan G. Komen Organization.

2011

Sharp Energy established a location in Pocono Lake, Pennsylvania.

2011

By the end of 2011, Sharp CGS had installed community gas systems in 60 developments serving over 6,500 customers in Delaware, Maryland and Pennsylvania.

2012

As of January 2012, the combined storage capacity for all active CGS communities exceeded 622,000 gallons of propane.

2013

In 2013, Sharp Energy signed up our first AutoGas customer, Kent-Sussex Industries.

2016

In 2016, Sharp Energy established a new propane location in Anne Arundel, Maryland.

Alliance Propane Services

2017

Sharp Energy signs its first National Propane Customer, BJ’s.

2017

Sharp Energy introduced a new charity bobtail to the community with proceeds benefitting Nemours, Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children.

2018

Sharp AutoGas expanded to Jupiter and Jacksonville, Florida.

2018

Sharp Energy acquired the propane sales and delivery business of R.F. Ohl, located in Lehighton, Pennsylvania.

2019

In 2019, Sharp Energy established a new propane supplier location in Mattaponi, Virginia.

2019

Sharp Energy acquired the propane operations of Boulden Brothers located in Newark, Delaware.

2019

Sharp Energy introduced a new charity bobtail to the community sponsoring the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware.

2021

Sharp Energy acquired the propane operations of Western Natural Gas, located in Jacksonville, Florida.

2021

Sharp Energy acquired the propane operating assets of Diversified Energy expanding its operating footprint into North Carolina and South Carolina.

2022

Sharp Energy acquired the propane operating assets of Davenport Energy’s propane division in Siler City, North Carolina.
