Propane Safety During Hurricanes and Severe Weather
Severe weather can affect your home, your propane equipment and access to your property. A little preparation before a storm can help you respond more safely if conditions change.
Before Severe Weather
- Know how to recognize the smell of propane and make sure everyone in your household knows what to do if they suspect a leak.
- Keep Sharp Energy’s emergency number, 888.742.7740, where it is easy to access.
- Follow local emergency-management guidance and monitor trusted weather alerts.
- Keep the area around your propane equipment accessible and free of loose debris when conditions allow.
- If your property is in a flood-prone area, ask Sharp Energy or a qualified propane professional whether additional tank protection or anchoring is appropriate.
- Call 811 before any digging or excavation around underground utilities.
During The Storm
- Follow evacuation orders and instructions from local officials.
- Never use outdoor propane appliances or portable generators inside a home, garage or other enclosed area.
- If you smell propane, avoid flames and sparks, leave the area and call Sharp Energy or emergency services from a safe location.
- Do not attempt to repair storm-damaged propane equipment yourself.
After the Storm
- Approach propane equipment cautiously and look for obvious signs of damage, movement, flooding or exposed piping.
- If you suspect damage or smell propane, leave the area and call Sharp Energy from a safe location.
- Do not turn propane service back on yourself after it has been shut off. A qualified professional should inspect the system before service is restored.
- Keep roads, driveways and access to propane equipment clear when it is safe to do so.
