What to Do If You Smell Gas: A Propane Safety Guide

Propane is a reliable and efficient fuel used in millions of homes, but like any fuel source, it must be handled with care. A key safety step every propane user should know is what to do if you smell gas — typically described as a strong “rotten egg” odor, due to an added odorant called ethyl mercaptan.

Following these steps can help you and your loved ones stay safe in the event of a suspected propane leak.

If You Smell Gas, Follow These Safety Steps Immediately:

1. To Prevent Flames and Sparks

  • Do not use a cell phone or telephone until securely outside the location.
  • Do not light matches or lighters.
  • Do not turn on or off light switches or use any electronics that could cause a spark.
  • Do not ring the doorbell or open any garage doors.

2. Leave the Area Immediately

  • Evacuate the building or area where you smell gas on foot – do not use a vehicle. Move upwind at least 500 feet away from your home or building.
  • Ensure everyone — including pets — leaves quickly and calmly.
  • Do not try to find or stop the leak.

3. Do Not Attempt to Shut Off the Gas Supply Yourself

  • If you suspect a gas leak or smell gas, do not try to turn off the propane tank valve yourself.
  • Immediately leave the area and move to a safe location.

4. Report the Leak

  • Report the leak from a neighbor’s home or other nearby building away from the gas leak. Call 911 and then contact Sharp Energy for professional assistance. Your safety is a top priority.

5. Do Not Return Until It’s Safe

  • Only return to the area once it has been inspected and declared safe by Sharp Energy or emergency personnel.

6. Have Your System Inspected

  • A qualified propane service technician must inspect your entire system.
  • Do not use any propane appliances until they have been professionally checked and cleared.

Preventive Measures You Can Take

  • Install UL-listed propane gas detectors for added protection.
  • Schedule annual maintenance checks of your propane system and appliances.
  • Educate your household on what to do in the event of a propane smell.
